Kodokan Judo's Beginning
Jigoro Kano - Founder of Kodakan Judo 1882Professor Jigoro Kano
Founder, Kodokan Judo

Founded in 1882, Kodokan Judo is a martial art that can be practiced by young and old alike. With techniques founded in Jujutsu and wrestling, Judo is the only sport in which students may practice at full speed without the need for protective equipment. Dr. Kano's intent was to create a martial art that can be practiced without fear of being injured, that provides discipline, a means to stay fit, a method of self-defense, and most importantly, a way of life.

Judo literally means "the gentle way", and when performed properly Judo is a fun sport to watch. Most people not involved with Judo know Judo for its spectacular throws. However, Judo is much more than that. Grappling techniques, pins, opponent control, arm locks, and Judo choking techniques makes Judo on of the most technical martial arts in practice today.

For those people wishing to learn a martial art, get exercise, and just have fun, come by the Dojo during one of our classes and experience Judo first hand. You do not have to participate, however, if you would like to try Judo, we have Gi's that you may use.
